Anything and everything is a thesis topic so long as it is able to provide the reader and the assessor with something that is new and legible, and importantly, has life in it and will stand on its own in the final analysis.
Let us briefly look at aspects that a good sample thesis topic must have.
Necessary: Criteria
The primary criterion for any subject to be taken up for thesis writing is its ingenuity. It may not necessarily have to be out-and-out new, but it definitely must have an aspect or feature or behavior that brings forth a whole new perspective of a known subject.
Sufficient: Supporting information
Obviously, from the statement above, it is imperative that the topic is unprecedented or at least the treatment is unique. But it does not suffice to just have a unique concept for it to be considered as a good sample thesis topic. One must have all the necessary supporting information vis-à-vis documentary evidence and appropriate references.
Having determined the two prerequisites of a good thesis topic, let us try and find these traits in some of the topics.
Example #1:
History has immense amount of scope to find diverse yet compelling thesis topics. Let us look at something like autocracies and the permanent stains they leave on societies. We have read about the devastation tyrants have wrought upon the very same peoples who had groomed them. The common and biggest mistake was that all the naive people of the respective nations believed these despots to be problem-fixers, God-sends and so on – an error in judgement which they realized too late to be corrected in their lives. But what could be interesting to study is about autocracies where people with full and thorough knowledge of a person’s apparent tyranny, have not only thrust absolute power in to their hands, but also repeatedly endorsed their regimes whole-heartedly. For example, the rule of Mao Ze Dong in ultra-communist China, up to the nineteen sixties (1960s), starting all the way back in the nineteen thirties (1930s). Good sample thesis topics are supposed to perform the job of a teacher. A thesis topic such as agriculture seems to be, on the face of it, common-fare. Another very good sample thesis topic could be elections. Electoral procedures have gone through hundreds of changes since the time democracy started to gain acceptance the world-over. However, not all of them could be called as effective or fool-proof. Since electioneering has had an evolutionary character, as indeed democracy itself – we can, perhaps, allow some short-comings. But, what cannot be ignored is how to improve the process to make democracies long-lasting and effective. So, there you have a topic that demands extensive research so an exploratory approach could be employed in writing a thesis on the same.
