Formatting Doctoral Dissertations Properly
Doctoral dissertations are crucial. The dissertation you write for your doctorate may well be the most important academic paper you have ever written. You cannot underestimate how difficult it is, how time consuming, how meticulous, and how long the entire process lasts.
There are, however, some things you can do to make the process a bit easier. Face it, you are going to have a lot on your plate at that time in your academic career. You will have to spend an extensive amount of time coming up with interesting, informative dissertation ideas. You will have to spend time carefully crafting your dissertation proposal as well – and somewhere in between there, you are going to have to do more research, hold more interviews, calculate more data than you have ever done in your entire scholastic life. As if the burden itself is not enough, the price of doing well or doing poorly, the pressure is literally excruciating.
The dissertation writing process is going to be hard enough. Do not think, however, that you can be any less concise with your structure and your format. The format of doctoral dissertations is very formal. Its own structure is very rigid in its specifics, although some of the less formal aspects can and will differ from university to university and even program to program.
Still, knowing the proper format can save you a lot of time and frustrating. Getting it down to a science in your mind can make your note taking and research processes go much more quickly and cleanly.
You begin with the signature page, although it is not numbered among the pages of the dissertation. For all intents and purposes, it is still the first page. In many cases, your adviser’s signature must be on that page, as a sign that he or she has approved the final draft of your paper. For doctoral dissertations, the second page is the title page. It is not numbered either. It includes the month and year when you met your degree requirements. Following that is the copyright page, which is applicable even if you are not trying to register your dissertation. After that comes your paper itself.
Broken down even further, the introduction of your paper is comprised of your signature page, title page, and copyright page, along with any acknowledgments, dedications, et cetera. Your abstract, the table of contents, tables, figures, and so on, are also part of the introductory material. However, these are all optional. The body of your paper includes the main content, any illustrations, the appendices, and the bibliography of your paper. All of these pages have to be numbered. The appendices and bibliography are, of course, required, and have to be included.
Being intimidated by the prospect of writing doctoral dissertations can academically kill you. Do not let them frighten you. There is too much dissertation help available to you for you to be scared. Besides, like any other paper, they can be broken down and written step by step – you will undoubtedly have to spend quite a while on the project, but the end result will be more than worth it.
